Baking cookies and making cocoa for a night of tree trimming and caroling. We put on our warm fuzzy pajamas and sang all the Christmas songs while we enjoyed cocoa and cookies and reminisced on each ornament! Then we would watch some good old Christmas movies, Charlie Brown, Wonderful Life, Rudolph, and pile up on the couch together. We had a nice homemade dinner and talked about the season and asked the kids what they wanted for Christmas. At some point we would all get in the car and ride around the neighborhoods that had outside decorating and maybe stop by a family members to see if they had made cookies too! We shook presents and tried to guess what each was. On Christmas Eve we would watch as many movies as we could pack into one night and we would talk about Christmases past. We tried to stay awake as long as possible, but we always fell sleep. Christmas morning we had to wait till mom and dad were up before opening anything and you best believe we hurried them out of bed. We did not just open everything as fast as possible, we enjoyed each gift and played with it some before opening another one. After opening our gifts we called our grandparents to tell them what santa had brought us and then our cousins to see what santa had brought them. Our cousins lived right next door so we all ran to eaches house to check out the new toys. Then our parents would call us home to get dressed so we could go to Aunt Paulas for Christmas lunch and open gifts with her. We prayed over our meal and we thanked our Lord Jesus for the sacrifices he made on our behalf and we knew what Christmas was. We felt it in our heart, and I never wanted it to end!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackbackwell in my town we have a whole celebration called old fashioned christmas. the whole town goes to the parking lot of the local grocery store where there r a whole bunch of games set up. such as broomball. there r also old fashioned fire trucks and hay rides. everyone dresses in old fashioned clothes and we have a feast for the entire town. it is very old fashioned and it reminds me of a time when things like christmas were about much more than presents and sales and stuff like that but rather being with family and friends and celebrating the birth of Jesus

Snow, tall tree, decorating the front lawn with christmas ornaments, carolling…I live in Australia, I’ve never seen a white Christmas, but that’s my idea of an old fashioned christmas

My idea of an old fashioned Christmas would be to put handmade ornaments on a real Christmas tree, like the construction paper garlands, strung popcorn, cranberries, etc. and to use those old fashioned big Christmas lights and tons of icicles. All of the food would be home made pies and cookies, home made bread, all of the women in the kitchen cooking together and all of the men playing football. Everyone singing carols together and not thinking it’s dorky. And most of all, saying a heartfelt prayer before dinner.

Where we live (rural midwest), people truly do have "old fashioned" Christmases. Christmas Eve is the night for the Church Christmas pageants and services – the children walk in the church with candles and after the service, each children is given a brown paper bag that is filled full of goodies like walnuts, peanuts, and other kinds of nuts and an apple. We go home to our cozy house with the Christmas tree lit, stockings hung on the fireplace, and have family prayer time, thanking our Lord for the gift of His Son. Sometimes we open gifts on Christmas Eve, sometimes on Christmas morning. The kids sleep downstairs by the Christmas tree, waiting for "Santa" to come. Christmas day brings a time for our family to get together for Christmas dinner and a lot of people around here have horse-drawn sleighs that they take out if there’s enough snow (last year we didn’t have snow, so there were no sleigh rides) and you can always be sure to catch a ride from a friend – it’s so much fun. My family also does a lot of baking the week before Christmas – cookies, candy, all sorts of yummy stuff!
