Why is the nativity scene rarely used as the picture to represent Christmas, especially when all the December holidays are represented by pictures? The Menorah represents the miracle of light, Christmas the miracle of life. Santa is the commercial representation, the secular version. As a Christian, it gets to me that there appears to be unequal treatment of the religious holidays. Christmas continues to become more and more secular, like showing the nativity scene is obscene.
Anyone else see this? Why?
I don’t know why, but I noticed the same thing.

Because little agnostic boys and girls don’t believe in Jesus. Commerce will not lose their parents dollars just because of a silly symbol.

Christmas is a secular holiday that has nothing to do with the birth of Jesus Christ. Nobody knows what day he was born. Christmas is borrowed from pagan holidays celebrating the winter solstice.

Maybe Christians are too busy fighting the "War on Christmas" and stealing atheists’ signs to put up their own Nativity scene? I know that sounds snarky but, seriously, you guys make up almost 80% of the USA so you have to ask yourself why you aren’t putting them up at your house.

Christmas represents the miracle of life, and it’s very obvious in the tree, the mistletoe and holly etc. Keep in mind that it was a festival of life and light before Christianity came along.

For one thing the celebration of christmas is based on a pagan holiday that the christian church stole to get pagan worshippers to convert. Historical evidence shows that Jesus was born in spring/early summer not winter.

I see the nativity scene with some frequency. More often than I see a menorah… A lot more. Santa is a pleasant sight, he represents the need to give to those in need. That children everywhere deserve some joy in their lives. And the comparing to Chanukah is a strange comparison…. Chanukah is frequently looked over, and in many places not seen at all. Yet I assure you that I see nativity scenes with some frequency and they seem to be in no danger.

The Nativity is really a Mithra thing so your religion is better with out it and the three wise men. One also has to doubt the idea that the Romans decided to have people leave their property and stay at the Holiday in Barn in order to be counted and pay their taxes. There is also a certain irony to be had in complaining about secular holiday cards since nothing is more secular than mail! I understand that santa clause intrudes on your holidays, he does mine as well and I am from a completely different tradition! Still, you gotta keep in perspective the best place to have religion is in the home or at a house of worship. The worst place is the post office.

because it’s not politically correct to even BELIEVE in Jesus and the christmas story, let alone proclaim it. sad. very sad. same reason they want the pledge of alliegance to lose the "under God"
it should bother people more.
DONT even get me started on the EASTER BUNNY!!!!!!!!!

My parents’ next door neighboor has a Mickey/Minnie Mouse nativity scene in their yard. Now if that’s not embracing the spirit of Christmas, I don’t know what is.

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason." [John 15:18-25 NIV]"

We’ve been seeing it happen little by little for years. Commercialism pushed holiness aside at Christmas time. Santa and commercialism are not new. Perhaps Christians were "sleeping"/ignoring what was happening but it didn’t happen all of a sudden.
Showing the nativity scene IS offensive/obscene to many/most who do not believe in Jesus Christ or the Virgin Birth. At one time they would have been in the minority for expressing that offense so they didn’t. That is no longer the case. Again, we should not be surprised because Jesus told us exactly what to expect.
Blessings.

In America (can’t speak for the rest of the world), the Nativity is too ‘religious’ a symbol to be used in public governmental places. It smacks too much of the thought that the government is endorsing Christianity as a national religion, which is unconstitutional. Therefore, either the Christmas tree or Santa is used in public places, including, of course, shopping malls, etc. where they want the commercial aspect of the season capitalized. Creches are reserved for homes, churches, etc. Especially these days when other religions are being more forward about their winter holidays also, it is the more ‘politically correct’ thing to do.
