I am in need of ideas for cute Christmas ornaments that I can make at home with my 5 & 7 year old children. Thanks!!!
We made homemade playdough ornaments one year. The recipe for playdough is 1 cup flour to 1 cup salt and add enough water to make it the right consistency. You can use it like clay or roll it out and use cookie cutters…like make gingerbread men, snow men or stars. Bake it in a low oven until hard (I don’t remember how long. Then you can glue on glitter, eyes, yarn, whatever.
We live near the beach and my sisters kids made ornaments out of seashells. Their Dad drilled holes, the kids glued on glitter and strung ribbons through the holes. You could do that with whatever is common in your area and collecting the stuff ispart of the fun.
Don’t overlook cutting out paper stars and snowflakes and pipecleaner candycanes (twist a red and white pipecleaner together then bend to form a candycane. You can either just hang over the branch or tie on a ribbon to hang it with if you want more color.)
If they have a bunch of small toys, like farm animals or small dolls or little stuffed toys or whatever, tie them with ribbons and hang them on the tree.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI had a Christmas when we popped a bunch of popcorn and bought cranberries, then we strung them with a needle and thread. We wound these long strands of popcorn and cranberries around our tiny little tree and it was beautiful!!

Raised kids with little money!
Go to Walmart or a similar store to explore their craft section. There are colorful beads that only need stringing and a hanger to put on your tree. Also, paper cut-out snow flakes are always a pleasure to do and to see on a tree. Have fun and Merry Christmas to you!

Let’s see —
I’ve seen angels made out of white plastic spoons (the round part is the face, the stem is the body)
Glitter snowflakes (use all-in-one bottles of glitter glue for less mess)
Ojos de Dios (eyes of God) – a Mexican ornament using twigs, popsicle sticks, etc. to form a cross and then winding yarn in and out around the center – very easy and interesting. http://www.dltk-kids.com/world/mexico/ojo_de_dios.htm
Get those triangular plastic beads in red, green, and white and string them in patterns on lengths of pipe cleaners, then bend them into the shape of a candy cane. Really good for using those fine motor skills.
Finally, every year my sister does some crafty thing with her two girls (they are actually teenagers now). One year they took clear glass ball ornaments – the common kind – and put paint and glitter inside and kind of swirled it around. Those turned out really fab.
Here’s a website with scads of things you can make with your kids – including some I already mentioned: http://www.childfun.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=212

My son did this for me one year;
Take a piece of poster board and cut into a circle, with a hot glue gun (supervised of course) glue different fun shaped noodles to the edges, leaving enough room for your child’s picture in the middle and punch a hole at the top for the ribbon, before pasting the pic on, you can paint it with child safe paint. My child’s teacher let them spray paint it silver but she used fume less paint (safety first). Then just add the picture and year on it.
I love it soooo much. We put it up every year.
They also have some fun shapes cut from wood at the craft store and they can paint them themselves and add glitter and a ribbon. Maybe a picture of the year.

Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

1/4 cup white glue
cookie cutters(Christmas)
Mix together and roll out to 1/4in. thick. Cut with cookie cutters.
Don’t forget to make holes(straw works great)Flip over periodically until dry(1-2 days) We decorate ours with glitter glue.
They smell great and the smell lasts a long time.
